Apprenticeships

Earn a good salary and benefits while you train for a career. Union apprenticeship programs combine paid on-the-job training with classroom instruction. Over 800 apprenticeships are available in California for jobs in construction trades as well as for automobile technician, correctional officer, fire fighter, medical technician assistant, heating and air conditioning, communications technician, culinary, meat cutting and more.

Must be 18 or older in most cases. Some unions allow 17 year olds with parental consent.

California Conservation Corps

Earn a salary while you help enhance and protect the environment. Participate in projects such as reforestation, landscape management, trail construction, oil spill cleanup, habitat improvement, plant cultivation, erosion control and recycling. The Corps also responds to natural disasters such as forest fires and floods. Residential and non-residential programs are available. High school diploma and GED programs are available for those who have not completed high school. Normally a 12-month program. Members who complete the year-long program can earn up to $4,000 for educational expenses at college or vocational school.

The cost of room and meals is taken out of the salary of those who are living on-site.

Must be between the ages of 18–25.

Courses to train for a specific career field and gain skills for employment. Training is available in Business Services, Health & Human Services, Hospitality, Industrial/Engineering Technology, Science & Biotechnology and Art & Communication. Call for more information or to receive a free brochure. Courses are located on high school campuses throughout Contra Costa County and may be taken as part of a regular high school schedule. Several off-campus sites are also available. High school students earn credits. Adult classes are also offered.

No charge to those still enrolled in any type of high school diploma program. Young adults who are out of high school need to pay for their books and a small lab fee.

The Job Corps offers many occupational training opportunities. Choose careers such as Carpentry, Information and Business Technology, Word Processing/Database Administration, Cisco Academy, Facilities Maintenance, Cement/Masonry, Electrical, Painting, Nurse Assistant/Home Health Aide, Childcare Development, Culinary Arts, and Security. Earn your diploma through the High School Diploma Program or the General Equivalency Diploma (GED) program. Other courses available in Health Education, Driver’s Education, Workplace Communications, and English as a Second Language (ESL). Participants live on-site and receive free room and meals, medical and dental care, spending money, child care assistance, counseling and other benefits. Upon graduation from the program, placement counselors help find employment. Readjustment funds are given to help you make a successful transition into the work world.

No charge.

Must be at least 16 and not yet 25; a U.S. citizen or legal resident; underemployed or in need of training; within the low-income guidelines; willing to abide by Job Corps’ zero tolerance for drugs and violence policy and other Job Corps rules.

The military may be a good first job choice, a way to train for civilian employment after your tour of duty and/or a way to put money aside for college. You may choose from regular enlistment, reserve enlistment or college programs (ROTC and Military Academies).

Youth Development Services (YDS)

Helps eligible students to prepare for careers and/or further education after high school through the Workforce Investment Act (WIA). Vocational (job) training and financial aid guidance is given. Students may receive job internships, job shadowing opportunities, subsidized work experience, stipends for attending tutoring and other incentives. The YDS Coordinators work closely with the students to connect them with other resources through the East Bay Works One Stop Career Centers.

Young parents can also find help for their three to five-year old children through the HIPPY program (Home Instruction Program for Pre-School Youngsters). This program is designed to support parents who wish to provide education enrichment at home for their preschooler. Parents are trained to present simple lessons to their children that help them develop their language, problem solving and discrimination skills.

No charge.
